What the Pickaxe does

The Pickaxe is one of the three official upgrade lines (“Upgrade your warmth, pickaxe & backpack!”). It is the pace upgrade: Warmth buys time on the mountain, the Backpack buys volume, and the Pickaxe decides how fast that volume fills — and which crystals break at all.

The official description does not publish pickaxe tiers or prices. What official artwork does show is a visual progression: the “before” image pairs a rusty, worn starter pickaxe with flat-ice starting zones, while the “after” image shows a polished blue-mineral pickaxe and, in cave finds, rainbow-crystal endgame tools. Treat any site listing exact pickaxe tier names or costs as unverified.

What the Pickaxe gates

Read the upgrade as three gates:

1. Pace. Faster cracks per vein — more crystals per warm-window before the cold pushes you down. Pace only pays if Warmth can hold the window open.
2. Access. Harder veins and boulders presumably require stronger pickaxes; the exact requirements are in-game. If a vein won’t crack, the game is telling you which upgrade to buy next.
3. Economy. More crystals per minute is more Cash per minute — and more spare duplicates for the garden, the game’s permanent luck bank.

When to upgrade the Pickaxe

Three signals, in the order most players hit them:

1. A vein won’t crack. Access gate — the next Pickaxe tier is the purchase.
2. Veins crack but the run ends too soon. If Warmth still has time left when the backpack fills, the bottleneck is pace or capacity — see upgrade priority.
3. You are farming a rich hourly zone. Pace converts the fresh zone hour into more crystals before the rotation moves on.

Pickaxe FAQ

• Is there a best pickaxe? The description doesn’t publish tiers. Official art shows at least three visual stages (rusty starter, blue-mineral, rainbow endgame); the strongest available at your stage is the right purchase.
• Does the Pickaxe affect crystal weight or value? Weight is a crystal property, not a pickaxe property — see the crystal guide. A better pickaxe gets you more crystals per hour, not heavier ones.
• Pickaxe or Backpack first? Full runs end early → Backpack. Runs end with an idle pickaxe waiting on Warmth → Warmth. The full logic is in upgrade priority.
